Know Why Before You Buy |
|
Susan Aaron |
"I want to go
back to school, but I don't know what I want to do.
Should I just go and figure it out while in school?"
This is a common question among students of all ages.
Would you buy fancy duds (no returns!), take them home
and then try them on to see how they look? Avoid the
risk. Instead of going for a general education in a
field, figure out what you want to be doing when you get
out of school -- and why. Your Goals may well change and
mutate, but having Goals will give you a path from which
to wander once you've made some progress.
Not sure what you want to do after school? Here are some
ways to find out.
Take a Quiz
Monster's "Discover Your Perfect Career Quiz" is a good
place to start and is based on the popular Myers-Briggs
test. This quiz focuses on your interests and the way
you like to work. There are many other assessments
available online, in books and in person.
Read Some Books
Here are some classics on career exploration:
What
Color Is Your Parachute? by Richard Nelson Bolles
I
Could Do Anything If I Only Knew What It Was by Barbara
Sher
Second
Acts: Creating the Life You Really Want, Building the
Career You Truly Desire by Stephen Pollan and Mark
Levine
Talk to a Career Counselor
High school students should reach out to their academic
counselors, while college students and graduates seeking
more schooling should check their undergraduate
institutions for career counseling. You can also hire
your very own career counselor.

what possibilities are on the other side of the ivory
tower.
Study Job Descriptions
Think about how different job descriptions mesh with
your personality and interests. Are you patient enough
to be a reSearcher? Do you like contact with people
enough to be a corporate trainer? These links will help:

Narrow Your Choices
Then really investigate those occupations still left on
your list. How?
Interview
people in the occupations that interest you. If you are
a college graduate, your old college may be able to help
you find past alumni who now work in the professions you
investigate.
Email
your contacts and ask if they know someone in the
profession who might be helpful to you. Your best
friend's aunt's high school boyfriend could be the
architect, brain surgeon or flea circus trainer who will
become your mentor. You can also use Monster Networking
to find people with skills and experience of interest to
you.
Read
the specialized journals and books on those professions.
Pay attention to the "who" as well as the "what." Search
for more information on the people doing the most
interesting jobs.
Visit
the Web sites of the occupation's professional
association. Quite often these sites will include
information about education and career choices. To find
these Web sites, go to the
Department
of Labor's Online Occupational Outlook Handbook, find
the occupation you want and scroll to the bottom of the
page.
Explore
Monster's Job Search. Use the keyword Search to discover
how career fields match up to job descriptions, what
companies are hiring in those fields, and what they want
in terms of education and experience.
Yes, all this exploration is time-consuming. But
compared to spending years in school and thousands of
dollars for tuition and other education expenses, a few
months of reSearch before applying to schools is well
worth the effort.
You'll end up with a list of possibilities in mind as
you study and work. Those possibilities will shape your
educational choices and spur your imagination with ideas
for your future. And this way, you can make your
education a good fit for your career Goals, just like
those fancy duds you tried on in the store make you look
great, too. |
